What is it? 
It is a process that results in the reduction of friction between two moving surfaces, by introducing a substance between them – the lubricant, which can be solid, liquid or pasty.

The importance of lubrication
Lubrication is essential to allow the full functioning of mechanical equipment. No lubrication causes premature wear, increased temperature or the mere impossibility of starting the operation of some equipment, as they would break down in a fraction of a second.

Oil change in motor vehicles
Changing the car’s oil is essential for the proper functioning and longevity of the engine. All engine oil has a service life, and even if the crankcase is filled, it needs to be changed after a period of work due to several reasons:
 
A) External Contamination 
– Filters cannot block the passage of all air particles. After a while, depending on the vehicle’s condition of use, the oil will show concentration of solid particles, which may result in the abrasive action that causes premature wear.
 
B) Solid by-products from oil oxidation as a function of working temperature
 – These residues – also called carbonization – are a product from the breakdown of oil’s molecular chain, resulting from its exposure to high working temperature. They are cumulative and over time they become abrasive, so after a certain period, which depends on the engine’s working temperature, the concentration reaches a level that compromises the engine’s service life. Therefore, the oil must be changed before the concentration of these solids reaches a hazardous level.

C) Loss of efficiency of the additive package
– All engine oils have additives such as anti-corrosives (acidity neutralizers), anti-wear, detergents etc. By using oil, these additives lose their efficiency, affecting the engine’s service life.
Industries also need to change lubricants after periods of use. In addition to this procedure, as in vehicles, it is necessary to apply the correct lubricant, indicated for the respective working condition of each type of equipment.
